A state of emergency in Bangladesh that has included the banning of political activity and a free press and led to extrajudicial killings is masking efforts by the military and its backers to stall parliamentary elections, human rights activists and observers say. - By Nora Boustany

good people of BD should fight back without violence against the army. But not use the mosque and also must not let the right wing fanatics use it either. If the right wings are allowed to succeed that will open up another front. The venom that comes out of the mouth of these ill educated Mullahs would turn this decent people into the very terrorist that EU high commission have forwarned us about. Best of luck and good wishes to the people of BD.

I wish there were interviews of average citizen. Are they happy? Activists will say what they are supposed to say but in practical reality democracy did not deliver in Bangladesh. So its time to think something new.

Please report on the state of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, in 30 years they will cease to exist as they will be forced to move to India or face other dire consequences. Look at the census data on their numbers as proof.

The Headline doesnot confirm with the details of the news. Public opinion may kindly be examined on such reporting. The way current interim govt is clearing garbage left by last govts of at least15 years, deserves appreciation. Views of envoys and donor agencies should get due attention while preparing such reporting.

As of Januray 27th, The government has banned political and trade union activities and restricted provocative news, including talk show, in print and electronic media under the Emergency Powers Rules 2007. This new rule has already restricted free talks and the intention behind this new rule appears to be very unclear. The largest blogging group in Bangladesh has already faced restriction the members can no longer post in its main page. Some bloggers have switched to other providers.

Dear Ms. Nora Boustany, Please visit the country and take the opinion of common people before you make any comment accusing Bangladesh Army and Civil Society. The recent role of Bangladesh army is highly appreciated by the people as well as all political parties. A healthy and good democracy cant sustain without peace and stability. This will never be a Pakistan because people of Bangladesh has a different anthropological upbringing. It is stated that a crackdown to quell election-related violence has resulted in 19 deaths in the past 10 days, according to Odhikar, a Bangladeshi human rights group. About 2,000 people have been arrested, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Bangladeshi journalists say. In the first place, you got the information because of the freedom of press. Have you this kind of freedom during any Emergency in any country of the world? During the operation under RAB and BNP rule, hundreds of people died misteriously and no investigation was done. This goverernment has already anounced that it took steps to investigate the unknown deaths and serve the justice. Is it not unique for a govt. with emergency power to go for adminsitrtive and judicial investigation? However, it was not done during the rule of BNP, a political govt. This situation is much better than a corrupt democracy under political and power dictatorship of Iazuddin. In fact, President Iazudding Ahmed acted worse that a military dictator would have done. He should be taken to the court for misuse of power. The election commission misused almost 200 crores. These must be investigated and people who plundedred public money must be punished. We need to be patient. Sick democracy needs a anti-biotic and rest for nine more months. Three months already gone. Can we allow nine more months to fix some of the issues that will never be touched by any political government. Sincerely, Dr. Jamir Chowdhury Qatar University
